August 4 1928 - Notable Passengers

The EMPRESS OF ASIA commanded by A. J. Hailey concluded a Pacific crossing upon reaching Vancouver on August 4th, 1928.  A smooth passage from Yokohama was described with an average crossing speed of over 19 knots.  A passenger list of 500 was reported with 56 Saloon, 46 Second Class, 36 Third Class and 320 Steerage.  Cargo included a heavy silk consignment of 4,138 bales of raw silk and 231 cases of silk goods.  Other cargo included tea, rice, pineapple, rubber, rattan furniture, curios and coffee.  A large mail consignment was carried, comprising nearly 2, 000 bags.  A total of 760 bags of mail were discharged at Victoria, 37 bags for the local delivery, 20 bags for delivery to the United States by airplane, and the remainder, ordinary mail for the United States.

The ship carried three rare birds from Japan that were being transported for display at the Toronto Exhibition.
