Notable Passengers

The EMPRESS OF ASIA, commanded by George Goold, began a Pacific crossing upon sailing from Vancouver on January 8^th 1938. The effects of the Sino-Japanese conflict in China was having a dramatic effect on the Trans-Pacific commerce an the EMPRESS OF ASIA reported an extremely small passenger list and travelers avoid the troubled area.

This voyage marked the resumption of Shanghai as a port of call. The ship had not visited Shanghai since the evacuation of refugees when the Japanese fleet moved into the Whangpoo in August of 1937.

On this voyage Manila would not be called upon as the ship was scheduled for an overhaul at Hong Kong.

Local Chinese residents and religious organizations collected four tons of used clothing in Vancouver. The clothing was carried aboard the ship to Hong Kong to be distributed among Chinese refugees.

Other cargo consisted of a large fruit shipment that was transferred from the Royal Mail Lines vessel LOCHMONAR to the EMPRESS OF ASIA at Victoria.
